Manipolazione di Cultura (1974)
Manipolazione di Cultura [Manipulation of Culture]. Mauri worked on Manipolazione di Cultura from 1971 to 1973, and the final work is collected in a book published by Nuova Foglio (January 1976, Macerata).
The work consists of big hand-painted pictures printed on a black canvas.
The structure is divided into three: on top, a photograph taken from the historical images of the Nazi and Fascist era; in the centre, a black, monochrome area; at the bottom, a half-Italian, half-German caption. Disturbingly, the subject of the caption is never expressed. The reference to the group who holds the power is implicit. However, it can be applied to the audience itself. For example: They win the sailing competition, They film everything, They sun-bathe.
The black monochrome, slightly different in every painting, varies according to the size of the picture, creating a rhythm of different levels of blackness, or maybe of evil itself. (Dora Aceto)
