Omaggio al Gutai (1990)
Omaggio al Gutai [Tribute to Gutai] is a performance presented in 1990 during the inauguration of the exhibition Giappone all’Avanguardia: il Gruppo Gutai negli anni cinquanta [Avant-garde Japan: the Gutai Group in the ‘50s] in the main hall of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome.
An opening piano, drums and motorbikes concert plays on the background while a mime dressed up in red dances the ‘Sanbaso Supermodern’ dance realised by Kazuo Shiraga in 1957; a mock kendo fight follows.
Western and Eastern culture meet on the common ground of their futuristic elements.
Thanks to this encounter-fusion, the audience had the opportunity to take active part in the performance of the Gutai group.
